Admissions Overview

An Unsurpassed Education

Our engaging curriculum, supported by accomplished faculty, allows students to excel in advanced courses and on standardized tests.
  • MUS offers 19 different Advanced Placement courses in a variety of subjects. Ninety percent of our students score a 3 or higher on Advanced Placement exams in an average year, which often translates to college credit prior to entering college.
  • During the last five years, our mid-range SAT I scores and ACT composite scores were approximately 30 percent above the national average.
  • MUS seniors are accepted to some of the finest colleges in the nation. The members of the Class of 2009 were awarded more than $8 million in scholarships based on academics, athletics, or leadership.

Faculty Who Care

Our experienced, talented faculty know how to educate young men. They provide a liberal arts education that sharpens critical thinking skills, connects information across educational disciplines, and provides a more informed understanding of the world.
  • For the last five years, the average percentage of MUS graduates receiving recognition from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation has been 28 percent. The fact that MUS historically produces the most National Merit Finalists and National Merit Semi finalists of any other independent school in Memphis is a testament to the personal attention our teachers give students.
  • The faculty averages 23 years of teaching experience. Fifty faculty members hold master's degrees and six have earned doctorate degrees. Eleven faculty members are alumni of MUS.
  • The student-faculty ratio for classroom teachers is 10 to 1.
  • Our faculty dedicate themselves to the "development of well-rounded young men" as it says in our mission statement. We feel confident that we are one of the few secondary schools in the nation to win the State Latin Championship and State Football Championship in the same year (in 2008-09).

A Values-Based Environment

Our school motto, Veritas Honorque (Truth and Honor), says it best. Our student-run Honor System, student-run Civic Service Organization, and weekly guest speakers emphasize the altruistic principles upon which MUS was founded.

A Tradition of Fellowship and Leadership

MUS provides a broad array of student involvement where everyone can find a niche. Our boys are encouraged to exercise individual gifts and develop leadership potential as they experience a sense of belonging within a fellowship of common purpose. And as students grow academically and socially, supporting one another in a respectful manner, they share accomplishments and forge friendships that last a lifetime. Please take a moment to read our Community Impact Report and see how integral the leadership of our school and alumni are to the Mid-south region.

The Application Process

The goal of the Admissions Committee is to enroll young men with promising academic potential who will make positive contributions to the MUS community. An applicant's grades, as indicated on the transcript from his current school, scores from the Independent School Entrance Examination (ISEE), and teacher evaluations are the primary factors in making an admissions decision. Other factors considered by the Admissions Committee include an applicant's standing in his class, his extracurricular involvement, his perceived interest in MUS based on visits to campus and contact with our Admissions Office, the availability of space in the grade the applicant wished to enter, and any other information the Admissions Committee deems relevant.

Our priority deadline for receiving applications for our 2010-11 school year is December 10, 2009. Applications received after this date will only be considered if spaces are available in the class the student wishes to enter.
