The program aims to develop the student’s ability to read, write, speak, and understand his chosen language. Instruction is offered in French, Spanish, and Latin. Latin I is required in Grade 8. In Grade 9 the student may continue in Latin, or he may begin studying a modern language. Foreign Language Curriculum Latin I | Latin II | Latin III | Latin IV | Latin V | French I | French II | French III | French IV | Spanish 7 | Spanish I | Spanish II | Spanish III | Spanish IV Honors Latin I This course is designed to bring students quickly to the point where they can read Latin with confidence and to give some insight into life in the early Roman Empire. Honors Latin II This course reviews the fundamentals of grammar and vocabulary from Latin I while introducing new grammar and vocabulary that enable students to further master the Latin language. Additional composition and translation, including selections from Caesar’s Gallic Wars and Fabulae Graecae (Jason and the Argonauts, Hercules, etc.) are emphasized. Honors Accelerated Latin III This course acquaints the student with the history, politics, and society of the final years of the Roman Republic. Readings are from Sallust's Catiline, Cicero's Orations, and other works. AP Latin IV This AP course introduces the philosophical, religious, and political concerns of Augustan Rome and includes readings from Vergil's Aeneid. AP Latin V This is an Advanced Placement course in lyric poetry. Readings are from Catullus and Horace. Honors French I This course serves as the introduction to French and is designed to enable the student to speak, understand, read, and write the language presented within the context of the contemporary French-speaking world and its culture. Honors French II This course is a continuation of French I (which is a prerequisite) with increasing proficiency in the target language. Honors French III and Honors Accelerated French III This course presents discussion, composition, and review of grammar based on readings dealing with contemporary French social and cultural topics. The course also includes an introduction to French history, society, institutions, and culture. Students enrolling in Honors Accelerated French III have additional assignments. AP French IV (French Language) This AP course is intended for students who have excellent command of the grammar and good competence in listening, reading, speaking, and writing, and who have chosen to develop their proficiency in French. Spanish 7 This course introduces the student to the Spanish language and culture. Areas of emphasis are vocabulary, reading, speaking, and writing. The course introduces students to social norms of Spanish-speaking peoples and provides a basic historical overview. Honors Spanish I and Honors Accelerated Spanish I This course is designed to introduce the student to the Spanish language and culture. The course stresses listening, speaking, reading, and writing through vocabulary enrichment and conversation in the classroom. Honors Spanish II and Honors Accelerated Spanish II Structured with a beginning four-week review of Spanish I, Spanish II continues the same vocabulary, grammar, and conversation as Spanish I with an added emphasis on daily usage of the language and short written compositions. Honors Accelerated Spanish II is offered for those students wishing to continue on to AP Spanish. Honors Spanish III and Honors Accelerated Spanish III This course is designed as a more intensive reading, conversation, and writing course through the study of culture, literature, and selected essay topics. Honors Accelerated Spanish III is offered for those students wishing to continue on to AP Spanish. Honors Spanish IV and AP Spanish IV Both of these courses stress conversation and writing of critical essays based on Spanish and Latin American literature. Foreign Language Faculty |
