Library Catalog

Search online with the MUS Library Catalog  (formerly known as iBistro).  Search for materials at MUS by default, or select ALL to search all four schools in the MAISLIC consortium (MUS, St. Mary's, Lausanne, and St. Agnes/St.Dominic).

  • Traditional books and e-books are listed, along with other types of material, such as videos and compact discs.  Traditional books are housed in the library; e-books are accessed online by clicking on the link in the catalog record.

  • Type in your search terms and click "Word or Phrase" for the broadest results. To get fewer and more specific results, click "Subject," "Title," or "Author."

  • Use truncation to find all possible endings of a word:  (philosoph$, ethic$, encyc$)

  • You can generate a printable list of items by clicking "Keep" to select items and then by clicking 'Kept" to view, sort, then print or email the list.

E-Books

netLibrary  These ebooks are listed individually in the MUS library catalog by title, author, keyword, and subject, but they can be searched by full text from the netLibrary site. Students and faculty can create accounts from school computers only and then log in from off campus. To create your account, click "Create a Free Account" in the upper right-hand corner of the homepage. When you click on an e-book to view it, it will not be available to any other user until you close it because this is a shared collection. Please be sure to close any e-books that you are not using. netLibrary will log you out after 20 minutes of non-use. For more information, see Mrs. Barnes's page on ebooks.

Gale Virtual Reference Library  This Thomson Gale database provides unlimited access to purchased ebooks, some of which are not available in print. They are listed in the MUS library catalog and are searchable by full text on the Thomson Gale site.

Digital Book Index  This site attempts to provide access to most of the electronic texts available on the Internet. It includes over 80,000 texts on commercial and non-commercial sites.  Volunteer based.

Project Gutenberg  Project Gutenberg is the first and largest single collection of free electronic books.

Bibliomania  Not always reliable, this site provides access to free ebooks as well.

Bartleby  You can browse and read books (non-fiction, fiction, poetry, and reference) page by page on the screen. As a new option, it appears that Bartleby.com has partnered with Amazon.com to provide a service where books such as those in The Harvard Classics Shelf of Fiction can be downloaded as a PDF file by clicking on download free e-books at the bottom of the page.

Internet Public Library's List of Online Texts  This list is just one small part of a website maintained by the University of Michigan's School of Information.

Google Print Beta  Google is developing a collection of ebooks held by major public and university libraries, such as Harvard and the New York Public Library, and so far it has a few public domain books in their entirety; copyrighted books contain only short selections. The objective will probably be to make content available for purchase, once the project has cleared its court challenges.  The value of the project is that less well-known, out-of-print books held in large libraries may be available electronically, albeit for a price.

Other Catalogs

You can search for your book through other library catalogs, including local public libraries.  To borrow a book from a library outside your area, contact us and we can request an interlibrary loan.

Internet Guide

Websites by Subject

See our Databases by Subject list in each academic field.  At the bottom of the subject's page is a list of internet resources.

Search Engines

Search engines are indexed by computers and driven by an algorithm.  Index more sites than directories but are less careful about what results show up.

Google One of the best search engines.

Ask.com
Natural language search engine; now incorporates Teoma.

All the Web  This is a large search engine that allows searches for web pages, pictures, videos, MP3 files, and FTP files.

Webcrawler  This metasearch engine combines Google, Yahoo, and other search engines; it operates under several names, including Dogpile and Metacrawler.

Search Directories

Search directories are indexed by people, not computers. They are driven by a hierarchical menu instead of a search algorithm.  Because of this, directories index fewer sites, but may give you better results than search engines.

The Internet Public Library   Maintained by the University of Michigan's Library Science school.

Librarians' Index to the Internet   Brought to you by the Berkeley Public Library.

The Digital Librarian  This site is maintained by Margaret Vail Anderson, a librarian in Cortland, New York.  Her site includes a long list of subject links that are diverse and up-to-date.

Michigan Electronic Library  Sponsored by the Library of Michigan, MEL offers a core set of useful subject links to its users.

BBCi  Search directory maintained by the British Broadcasting Corporation providing high quality sites with a UK focus.

Informine  Brought to the web by the University of California, Riverside, this directory offers over 110,000 academically useful sites.

Dewey Browse  This is a very easy to use website that arranges websites according to their Dewey number.

Pandia Search Central  Includes search directory tutorial and helpful guides.
