Dr. Reginald Dalle taught French at MUS for 30 years, from 1981-2011, but he left lifelong impressions on students and faculty alike. In addition to teaching all levels of the language and serving as an ambassador of French culture, Dalle coached junior varsity soccer, advised the French Club, and chaperoned trips to Latin tournaments, Model U.N., and Youth Legislature. He served as the chairman of the Foreign Language Department from 1992-2009 and received the 1999 Distinguished Teaching Award.
Perhaps Dalle’s most enduring school legacy began in the summer of 1999, when he opened his family home in France’s Loire Valley for MUS in Europe – the program he helped found with Science Instructor Bill Taylor. Chateau de la Giraudière served as home base for many trips thereafter. Instructor in English Elizabeth Crosby praised Dalle’s hospitality. “Whether he’s blowing the bugle for reveille or capture the flag, telling a ghost story, marching and waving red napkins to celebrate a birthday, organizing a soccer game with a local team, leading a hike to the local chocolate factory or church, planning daily excursions, chopping melons, slicing baguettes, or hanging the boys’ laundry out to dry, Reginald is a gracious host, rising first and retiring last to make all of us comfortable and happy in his home.”
