Eighth grader Varun Krishnamurthi and seventh graders Bryan Ding, Evan Wu, and Jerry Xiao advanced to the state MATHCOUNTS competition in Nashville in early March where the fearsome foursome took third place, and Ding, as an individual winner, earned the chance to play on the Tennessee team at the national competition in Lake Buena Vista, FL, this May.
There Ding and the state team took 11th place out of 56, and won Most Improved Team – the best Tennessee ranking in the last 10 years.
Ding described the atmosphere as “fun and friendly,” with “a lot of people doing math!” He noted that the Tennessee team surprised the judges. “It was funny when Tennessee won Most Improved,” he said. “Nobody expected us to win anything.”
