Alston Earns 200th Victory as Owls Head Coach

Congratulations to Head Coach Bobby Alston for his 200th victory with the varsity football Owls!

Following the 42-7 win over Ridgeway High School, Headmaster Pete Sanders honored the coach on the field. The tribute included a special video celebrating Alston, who is in the midst of his 25th season as head football coach, and the presentation of a banner signed by the 2022 football Owls. Cheerleaders threw commemorative footballs to the crowd as souvenirs of the evening.
Alston, who came to MUS in 1977, began serving as varsity defensive coordinator in 1980 and three years later as offensive coordinator. He took over the reins as head of the football program from legendary Head Coach Jake Rudolph in 1998.

Among Alston’s 200 wins are four state championships (2004, 2005, 2008, and 2009) and four runner-up finishes (2012, 2013, 2018, and 2020). The Owls had an unprecedented winning streak of 28 games, including going undefeated in the 2008 and 2009 seasons on their way to the state championships. Among many honors, Alston was inducted into the Tennessee Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2018 and TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2020.

“Sports builds character by displaying it,” the coach is fond of saying. “Our stumbles to live up to our goals show us and others where we need to improve. I believe we have sports in our school because we can teach those life lessons that help fulfill the school’s mission.”

Alumni influenced by Alston’s coaching sent letters congratulating him on his 200th victory. From star athletes to those who mainly cheered from the sidelines, the former players expressed their gratitude for his life lessons that influenced them both on and off the field.
