Taylor Receives Jean Barbee Hale Award

Ask anyone in the Athletics Department who is the most valuable member of the team, and they are likely to name this staff member: Athletics Administrative Assistant Beth Taylor. When Headmaster Pete Sanders announced that Taylor was the 2023 recipient of the Jean Barbee Hale Award for Outstanding Service, employees assembled for the Faculty Luncheon rose for a standing ovation.
“Beth performs many unsung tasks that keep our 14 sports playing on,” Sanders said. “She has a consistently positive attitude that makes her a pleasure to deal with, a characteristic that brings students flocking to her desk. Or is that her candy dish? Probably a little bit of both.”

He added that she has bonded with many student-athletes and continues to stay in touch and follow their successes in college. They, in turn, are eager to stop by her desk when they return to campus.

“Coach Bobby Alston calls her ‘an amazing asset to MUS,’ and I agree,” Sanders said as he presented the award.

The Jean Barbee Hale Award for Outstanding Service is given each year to a staff member who exhibits the same qualities and spirit of Jean Barbee Hale – outstanding loyalty, responsibility, dedication, and commitment to excellence in service to the school. Hale’s husband, Ben, established the award in 1998 to honor his wife’s 24 years of service to the school. The Hales sent three sons to MUS, Scott ’78, Dennis ’80, and Steve ’84. Mrs. Hale passed away in 2001 and Mr. Hale in 2021.

“We are grateful to the Hale family for all they have done for MUS,” Sanders said.
