Delegation Honored at YIG

A number of students received recognition at the Youth in Government Tri-Star Conference held this month in Nashville. Led by co-advisors Jenny Pratt (instructor in French and Spanish) and Davis Smith (instructor in history), 44 boys attended the event. The following honors were awarded:

Juniors Joshua Blackburn and Wood Davis: Outstanding Bill Team
Sophomore Arjun Puri: MUS Delegation Award
Sophomores Jack Fernandez and Vijdan Gill: Supreme Court “Final Case” Team
Freshmen Harmon Colvett and Fawwaz Omer: Outstanding Novice Supreme Court Brief
Freshman Griffin Hood: Outstanding Delegate
Eight students were elected to officer positions, the most in school history: juniors Joshua Blackburn and Wood Davis; sophomores Reid Chandler, Jack Fernandez, Devin Malone, Vijdan Gill, and Jeffrey Shulkin; and freshman Harmon Colvett.

The club had two officers serving this year – seniors Oyama Hampton and Omkar Hosad.

“The boys did a super job, and we couldn't be more proud,” Pratt said.

The YMCA of Middle Tennessee sponsors a Youth in Government conference so that Tennessee high school students can learn about the real-world operation of the Tennessee State Government. Students form teams and serve as senators or representatives by drafting and debating bills. Other students have the opportunity to research and represent a state department in the Governor’s Cabinet, lobby for or against bills, participate in a model Tennessee Supreme Court, or work in the press corps.
