Ray Named Assistant Headmaster

Headmaster Pete Sanders has announced that Barry Ray will assume a new role as assistant headmaster in the fall. Continuing as Upper School principal, Ray will work closely with Sanders on a variety of responsibilities, including school policy, planning, calendars, and day-to-day operations.

Ray, who earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of the South, came to MUS in 1978 as a Lower School social studies teacher and coach. In 1987 he earned his master’s degree in education administration from the University of Memphis. At various times he coached football, wrestling, track, and baseball, and for nearly two decades, he has provided radio color commentary during Owl football games.
He joined the administration in 1990 as Lower School principal, and in 1996 he became Upper School principal. In addition, he has kept his hand in the classroom, teaching American history. In 2016 Ray earned the Jean Barbee Hale Award for Outstanding Service.

“With his proven record of leadership in both the Lower School and Upper School and his deep institutional knowledge, Barry Ray is the perfect person to serve as assistant headmaster,” Sanders said. “He brings vast experience, integrity, and an undeniable sense of fair play to this important role – in addition to his unwavering dedication to Memphis University School and its mission.”
