Jones Explores Power of Non-Violent Protest

Dr. Jonathan Jones, chair of the History Department, presented the X-Block talk “Civil Disobedience: Dr. King, 1963, and the Power of Non-Violent Protest.”
His presentation is part of our Owls Read project, in which the community has read Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” and the “I Have a Dream” speech. Jones explored seminal events in the civil rights movement, including the Montgomery Bus Boycott after Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat in 1955, protests in Birmingham, AL, in 1963 seeking an end to Jim Crow laws, and the March on Washington, also in 1963, to demonstrate for civil and economic rights for black Americans. After watching the presentation, students discussed questions about leadership and how to respond when they encounter injustice.
