Michael Wins Spicy Spelling Bee

Five Lower School Owls met in heated battled during the third and final round of the Terry N. Shelton Spelling Bee Monday, December 7. Seventh grader Madoc Michael was sizzling in competition, earning the title and the opportunity to represent the school in the 2021 Shelby County School Spelling Bee. No date has been set for that event, but it will be sponsored by University of Memphis.
The five seasoned competitors, eighth grader Kushal Patel and seventh graders Michael, Jack Rutter, Fletcher Taylor, and Noah Winstead, all won top spots in preliminary bees. So it was no surprise that the competition was hot throughout, as Michael slowly eliminated the field. He stung his final opponent, Winstead, with the winning word, cayenne.

All competitors were so well skilled in the spelling arts that they completed the entire 2020 word list and forced announcers Mr. Dax Torrey and Mrs. Michelle Crews to resort to a previous year’s list. Congratulations to all competitors for a great event!
