Sowell Named Morrison Chair of Science

Headmaster Pete Sanders has announced that Mrs. Analice Sowell is the new Ruth McCaughan Morrison Chair of Science. A member of the school’s science faculty since 2007, Sowell chairs the department and teaches Chemistry and Materials Science.
A respected teacher who goes above and beyond to engage her students, Sowell received the MUS 2019 Outstanding Teaching Award and the 2018 Kishor M. Kulkarni Distinguished High School Teacher Award. Presented by the ASM Materials Education Foundation, the Kulkarni Award recognizes the accomplishments of a U.S. high school teacher who has demonstrated a significant, long-term impact on pre-college students. An active member of the American Chemical Society, she has chaired the Memphis chapter and written curricula for National Chemistry Week.

Former MUS Chairman of the Board of Trustees, the late William P. “Buddy” Morrison, along with his sons, John, Price ’75, and Joe ’78, established this chair in 1984 to honor his wife and their mother, Ruth McCaughan Morrison. The previous chair was Mr. Bill Taylor, instructor in biology, who retired in May.
