December Owl Ovation Honors Large

Ross McCain Lynn Chair of History Jonathan Large is the Owl Ovation honoree for December.
“He does a great job engaging the kids in the material and often takes them outside to learn. He has a great attitude and [my son] comes home speaking about how much he enjoys his class. From a parent perspective, he seems truly invested in the boys learning,” a parent said.

An MUS instructor in history since 2008, Large teaches AP U.S. History, History of the American South, History of Britain, and – his students will tell you – gentlemanly behavior. He is the Pied Piper of the Civic Service Organization, leading by selfless example to engage students in the joy of giving back. In addition, he helps coach the trapshooting team.

Large earned a bachelor’s in history at Rhodes College and a master’s in history from University of Kentucky. An avid scholar, he spent nearly two weeks researching Civil War historian Shelby Foote at UNC Chapel Hill in 2012 after receiving the Hale Fellowship for Faculty Development. He has held the Ross McCain Lynn Chair of History since 2014, and the Class of 2018 selected him for the John M. Nail Outstanding Teaching Award.
