Black History Month Programs Begin

We kicked off Black History Month February 2 with an X-Block presentation featuring an introduction by Assistant Principal Barry Ray, student contributions, and a performance of Lift Every Voice and Sing by Director of Music Matt Tutor ’91 and Music Instructor Chris Carter.
In a heartfelt delivery, senior Tamaz Young read two poems from his newly published collection of poetry, “Unrequited Expressions.” Then the following students spoke about what Black History Month or Black heritage means to them: seniors Peter Dailey, Christian Howard, Roderic Lewis, Chris Parks; juniors Kyler Herring, Loro Lado; sophomores Cristian Arocho, Kris Johnson; freshman Noah Davis; and seventh grader Oliver Leavitt.

Planned Black History Month presentations include the following:

February 8: Admissions Assistant Director and Coach Glenn Rogers, Jr. interviews his father, Glenn Rogers, Sr. who was the first Black football player at the University of Memphis.

February 16: English Department shares short poems or excerpts from literature highlighting relevant themes.
