RoboBuzzards Battle it Out

Competition was furious as four RoboBuzzards robotics teams vied for bragging rights in the first intramural contest of 2021-22. Twenty-three young engineers in Grades 7-9 competed November 10 in a challenge to transport blocks, cones, and balls across the course, over a ramp, and ultimately onto their opponents side of the course.
Emerging victorious was the team of eighth graders Bill Chiang, Aadil Omer, Wilson Pace, Fletcher Taylor, Sohum Verma; and seventh grader Will Brezina. Club advisor Garrett Smithson, instructor in science, said the winning team demonstrated skills in planning, structural durability, and driving skills that allowed them to outpace their competitors.

After the competition Smithson and the club’s co-advisor, Instructor in Science Nick Blackwell, discussed with the teams how to improve their robots and hone their skills.

“Win or lose, emotions got high, and the boys really experienced the spirit of competition,” Smithson said. “Many teams quickly realized their mistakes and made plans to improve. Some boys left that day feeling defeated but have returned with renewed vigor and are ready to use what they learned to excel in the next competition [not yet scheduled].

“So many of these boys are new to the team and will grow exponentially by the time we compete again. It is this growth, their skills as a team, and their combined resilience that we try to teach with this program. I look forward to continuing to watch them grow through the next competition.”
