M. Vincent Mutzi

Growing up in an Italian-American family, Vince Mutzi had bilingual beginnings. He added a third language by earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Spanish from the University of Mississippi and completing graduate work at the Instituto de Monterrey, Mexico. Coming to MUS from Georgia Southern University in 1970, he helped usher the Language Department into a new age of technology, as it gradually evolved from cassette tapes to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. A passionate and dedicated teacher for 38 years, he taught three levels of Spanish, and his classes quickly filled. William Ruleman ’75 knows why: “Three years under Mr. Mutzi enriched my love and grasp of language in general.”
He also served as advisor to the National Honor Society and chairman of the chapter’s selection committee for 24 years. Seeking to instill the NHS virtues of scholarship, character, leadership, and service was his first and foremost goal. As sponsor of the Spanish Club, he encouraged students to participate in activities outside of class, whether it was indulging in pizza and tacos he and his wife had prepared, attending a performance, or competing in local and state Spanish competitions. After retiring in 2008, he fostered continued camaraderie among faculty members by organizing the Retirees Luncheon Group. Even in retirement, Vince Mutzi has continued to be an ambassador for MUS, the school that first won him over in 1970.
