Wishing Our Retirees Well

We say farewell to three longtime members of the MUS family this May. Faculty, staff, friends, and family gathered at Dixon Gallery and Gardens May 26 to celebrate them.
Upper School Counselor and CSO Advisor Eddie Batey is retiring after 38 years at MUS. Over the years Mr. Batey was also a science and psychology teacher, a counselor in Lower School, and he co-founded a school leadership program in 2007. He coached basketball and track and led the varsity cross-country team from 1984-2000, and his 1991 and 1992 teams won state championships. Most of all, Mr. Batey has always had a heart for serving others and helping students achieve success and overcome challenges. He personifies the tenets of excellence, service, and leadership of our school mission.

Instructor in Latin for 26 years Mrs. Marilyn Reinhardt will also be leaving us to begin her retirement. Mrs. Reinhardt came to MUS in 1973 (when she was Miss Green) and taught Latin for eight years. After working at the university level, she returned in 2004 and has since taught hundreds of boys Latin I and Latin II. She also led nearly a dozen trips to National Junior Classical League conventions and guided numerous Certamen teams to Tennessee Junior Classical League championships. And she made what is called a “dead language” come alive by leading six Spring Break trips to Italy. Mrs. Reinhardt’s knowledge and enthusiasm for Latin have ignited a passion for the language for her students.

Mrs. Barbara Presley is retiring after 24 years as a library assistant in the Joseph R. Hyde, Jr. Library Learning Center. The last four years she also served as the school archivist, collecting and cataloguing articles, photos, videos, and artifacts that tell the school’s history since 1893. Known for her knowledge of MUS, her organization skills, and her ability to assist students with research, she will be missed by all who use the library. The former director of Hyde Library, Bonnie Barnes, said that Mrs. Presley’s “humility, wisdom, competence, creativity, perceptiveness, and depth of character are not often found in a single person.”
