Adams Focuses on Manhood Principles

Hunter Adams ’06 spoke to seventh and eighth graders during the monthly Manhood Breakfast March 3. Honor Council president his senior year, Adams focused on the three tenets of the Community Creed that most resonate with him: Truth and Honor, Respect, and Accountability.
He encouraged the boys to practice these principles now. His points included the following:
  • Truth and honor are of the utmost importance. You can’t get through life lying, cheating, and stealing.
  • Show respect to everyone in life. The more you do, the more it will become a habit. Develop compassion and empathy for others.
  • Take responsibility and accept the consequences for your actions. Own up to mistakes, figure out what happened and move forward with that information. Use those lessons now and in the future.
  • The tools to be a good man are here in these halls, with these teachers. Take advantage of that.
  • Do the right thing, do the right thing, do the right thing. You are responsible for your behavior.
Adams concluded by expressing gratitude to Assistant Lower School Principal and Math Instructor Joe Tyler and to his father, Lou Adams ’70, for the lessons they taught. As he spoke of his dad, who was sitting in the back row, his voice broke.

“This is ok too. You can cry. My dad taught me a lot. Many times, he told me, ‘You are responsible for your behavior,’” he said, looking at his father. “Thank you.”

Adams concluded on a lighter note: “This is a fun time,” he told the boys. “Don’t take yourself too seriously. Be confident in who you are.”
