The premier summer high-school basketball attraction in West Tennessee took place at Memphis University School in late June for the nineteenth-straight year as thirty-two local and out-of-town teams participated in the three-day Jerry Peters Memphis Summer Classic, which was held in conjunction with the Memphis and Shelby County Officials Association training camp.
The event consisted of eighty-nine games at two sites: MUS and Hutchison. The competition was so good at the Classic this year that only two teams went undefeated during their scheduled games. Teams participating were area public schools Bartlett, Booker T. Washington, Craigmont, East, Germantown, Houston, Kingsbury, Kirby, Melrose, Power Center Academy, Southwind, and White Station; area private schools Briarcrest, Christian Brothers, First Assembly Christian School, Harding Academy, Lausanne, MUS, and St. Benedict; West Tennessee schools Brighton, Covington, Fayette-Ware, and Union City; Nashville-area teams Brentwood Academy, Centennial, Hillsboro, Hume-Fogg, Montgomery Bell Academy, and Murfreesboro Riverdale; and out-of-state teams Center Hill (MS), Northpoint (MS), and Waynesville (MO).
The Owls gained valuable experience as they won six of their seven games in the event. Defeating Booker T. Washington, Brighton, Centennial, Hume-Fogg, Kirby, and Melrose, MUS played very well at times as the coaching staff was pleased with the effort and improvement.
Directed by MUS Head Coach Matt Bakke, the classic continues to spotlight high-school basketball in the way Coach Peters envisioned nineteen years ago.
“This-year’s Classic was outstanding. The competition was especially good as 64% of the game scores (57 of 89) were separated by ten points or fewer and 40% of the game scores (36 of 89) were separated by five points or fewer. The players really played hard, and I loved watching the coaches work with their teams,” explained Bakke.
Coach Bakke was especially pleased with the effort by his team.
“We really improved as the summer went along, culminating with the Classic. I really look forward to next season and getting to work with these guys again,” said Bakke.
