  • Tough Week For Owl Soccer

Tough week for MUS soccer! The team went 0-2 with losses to SGIS(2-1) and ECS(2-0). In the first game, MUS got off to a slow start and rallied to make the game close at the end. In the second game vs ECS, the score was 0-0 till midway through second half and a couple of lapses on set plays allowed the opponent to score. It was also a tough week due to injuries/illness: We lost 5 starters for the whole week -Hurley, Rosa, Mirza, Thomas and Kilgore were out due to illness or injury! Jace Ra is recovering from a shoulder injury and Ben Skahan was not available for the ECS game.
Probably one of the biggest games of the season is on Tuesday vs Briarcrest @ MUS. Briarcrest is off to a great start and a big region rival. They also have one of the top players in the region and he’s committed to Furman for soccer. The second game of the week is against Kingsbury HS, a very strong out of conference opponent, especially with the home field advantage.

  • Coach Beck's Recap of MBA and CBHS Games

The MUS soccer team went 1-1 this week with a 4-1 win over MBA @ MUS and a 1-0 loss versus CBHS @ CBHS. The MBA game was very exciting. MUS got off to a good start creating a lot of chances in the first half, but right before the half ended MBA caught us on a quick counterattack and scored. With 20 minutes left in the game MUS was still behind 1-0 although we had created several chances up until then. Thomas Pitts came on as a sub at this point and changed the game with his energy and speed. Within 10 minutes MUS had scored 4 goals (Pitts-3 and Kayhan Mirza - 1) and the game was secured. The CBHS game was a very competitive game and in the first 15 minutes MUS put CBHS under a lot of pressure and scored a goal from a corner kick. The referee determined MUS had fouled the GK and the goal was disallowed. One minute later CBHS intercepted a short back pass and scored. The remaining 60 minutes was a hard-fought physical battle that produced several good opportunities to tie the game, but time ran out for MUS and score ended up 1-0 for CBHS. The MUS coaching staff was very pleased with the effort and the quality of play produced by the team this week and are encouraged by the improvement the team is showing as we move through the season.

This week MUS will play a very strong Lausanne soccer team on Tuesday 4/2 at 6pm @Lausanne and go to Huntsville Alabama for the Grissom Invitational Tournament this weekend (4/5-4/6). MUS will play Valley View HS from Arkansas on Friday night at 7pm. The remaining tournament schedule is based on game-game results.

Highlight of the week: Thomas Pitts scored a hat trick in 20 minutes versus MBA!

  • Soccer Season Update From Coach Beck

Opening week of the season MUS Soccer played Sheffield and Houston. On Tuesday, 3/19 we played Sheffield at home and won 8-0. On Friday 3/22, we played Houston away and drew 1-1. The following players had goals or assists:
    Rhodes Heard 2 goals
    Ryan Matthews 2 goals
Thomas Pitts 2 goals and 1 assist
Sam Kilgore 2 goals and 2 assists
    Jake Knaff 1 goal
Kayhan Mirza, Knox McQuillen, Grant Young 1 assist each.
In both games MUS started a little slow, but after 15 minutes, they picked up their game and went at both teams. Sheffield was in the state tournament last year and Houston is a top team nationally each year.

This week the pattern continues with an up-and-coming MBA at MUS on Tuesday at 7pm. Memphis Business Academy had a strong team last year. We face the "Auld Enemy" CBHS away on Friday at 5:30pm. We are playing CBHS earlier this year due to Easter and tournament conflicts.

Our first two games had 5 different scorers for MUS. Our goal keeper, Ben Cramer, had a shutout and a strong game vs Houston.
