Basketball Weekly Recap- February 3rd-9th

The varsity team capped off an exciting Homecoming week with a three-point victory over regional foe St. Benedict (14-10, 0-4) in front of a full house in the Ross Lynn Arena last Friday. The Owls bounced back to win the game after a heartbreaking one-point loss last Tuesday against Arlington High School (19-6) on Retro Night in the old Todd-Snowden gym.

The team’s progress this season was on full display as the Owls played evenly with a talented Arlington team, who had beaten the Buzzards by 18 earlier in the season. The game came down to the final seconds as the Owls inbounded the ball, down by one point, with 13 seconds on the clock. Unfortunately, a steal by the Tigers would prevent MUS from getting a shot. After a missed free throw, the Owls had one more shot to win the game, but the desperation three from Henry Nickey would fall short. Nickey and fellow junior Ayman McGowan led all scorers with 17 points apiece while Coy Stiles led the Owls with 5 assists. Nickey also led the team on the boards by pulling down 13.

The Owls looked to bounce back this past Friday night against regional opponent St. Benedict. The game started off slowly for the team as they went into the locker room down by two points after a Nickey buzzer-beating three to end the first half. The two teams went back and forth throughout the third quarter with St. Benedict’s building a five-point lead with four minutes left in the game. However, MUS would not let their opponent score a point for the remainder of the game thanks to stingy team defense and drawn charges by Kyler Herring and Gavin Murrey. The Owls would go on to defeat St. Benedict, 43-40. The team was led in scoring by Nickey, who scored 19 points and made 58% of his field-goal attempts. Herring led the team in rebounding with five boards while also contributing nine points. The team held St. Benedict to five points in the fourth quarter. The Owls’ regional record now stands at 2-2.

This week, the Owls will travel to Evangelical Christian School (16-6) for a Monday-night matchup and will end the week with a regional game against the Saints of Briarcrest Christian School (20-5, 4-0) on Friday, February 14.
