  • State Recap

The team had some highs and lows at the state meet this year. As a team we finished 7th which was perhaps one slot lower than what we had hoped if we had performed at the top of our game in every event.

Our highlights begin with another incredible performance by Sellers Shy in the open 400 meter dash where he defended his state title and ran a personal best of 48.36. That is the 3rd best time run in MUS history placing Sellers behind the 2 best times of Carlton Orange and slightly ahead of Lee Moore. It is to be noted that both Carlton and Lee received All American honors in college so what Sellers has done on a limited training program is almost unbelievable. Other excellent performances were turned in by DJ Brown in the Shot where he PR'ed by over 2' (49-06) to finish 4th and a 2" PR by Stephen Christenbury in the HJ (5-10) to finish 7th.

Our other individuals who scored were Dorian Hopkins (3rd in the triple jump and 5th in the discus), Matt Rhodes (3rd in the discus), and Churchill Akhigbe (5th in the triple jump)

We had three relay teams that qualified with our best hopes being in the 4x200. That group ran well and finshed 3rd but we were disqualified for an exchange outside the zone. Tough break for the group of Sellers Shy, Jalen Hollimon, Devonte Nelson, and Jordan Helton. Hopkins took Shy's place in the 4x100 where we finished 7th. Then we finished in 8th place in the 4x400 with Nelson, Hopkins, Edwin Shy, and Sellers Shy.

  • Region Recap

Our team finished 2nd in the region meet. As we have done all season we competed very well in the field events but struggled on the track. In the field we had the following boys score:

Stephen Christenbury – 2nd in Decathlon, 2nd in High Jump, 5th in Discus
Churchill Akhigbe – 2nd in triple jump
Eston Pahlow – 1st in pole vault
Caleb Littlejohn – 4th in high jump
Gavin McKay – 2nd in pole vault, 3rd in long jump
Dorian Hopkins – 1st in triple jump, 1st in discus, 4th in shot
Mason Pahlow – 4th in pole vault
Marcus Love – 5th in long jump
Vincent Perkins – 4th in triple jump
DJ Brown – 2nd in shot
Matthew Rhodes – 2nd in discus

On the track we were not able to produce those same type results but we did have a few good moments:
Sellers Shy won the 400 in setting a personal record of 49.21
Shy joined DeVonte Nelson, Jalen Hollimon, and Jordan Helton to win the 4x200 relay
Gavin McKay finished 2nd in the 110 hurdles and 3rd in the 300 hurdles
DeVonte Nelson finished 2nd in the 200
Mason Pahlow finished 5th in the 400
The 4x100 team of Shy, Hollimon, Helton & Nelson finished 2nd
The 4x400 team of Shy, Nelson, Helton and Edwin Shy finished 3rd
The 4x800 team of Joseph Barnes, Rob McFadden, JP Wood, and Lawson Touliotos finished 3rd

Those boys that finished 1st in an event will automatically qualify for the state meet. We will also have a few qualifiers based on performance. Those are
    DJ Brown - shot
    Matthew Rhodes - discus
    Churchill Akhigbe - triple jump
    Stephen Christenbury - high jump
    4x100 relay team
    4x400 relay team

  • Last Week Decathlon and Lower School Recap

Last week began with the regional decathlon and we had Stephen Christenbury represent us. Stephen did a great job finishing 2nd overall. His best events were discus and shot but he also did a great job in the high jump and 400. We were all very proud of his effort.

The lower school capped a great season with a convincing team victory in the Shelby League Championships. The top individual was Jaxon Hammond who placed 1st in the 100, 200, and 400. For his efforts he was named Co-Most Outstanding Athlete of the Meet. But the strength of the team was in the total number of guys we had earning points throughout the meet helping the Owls outscore runner-up ECS by over 30 points. Congrats to Coach Johanson on leading her team to the championship in her final coaching event at MUS.

This week the regional track meet begins on Tuesday and will finish on Thursday. The Owls have several athletes hoping to preform well enough to advance to the state meet in late May.
