The doctors at ZüpMed will offer free physicals for MUS boys rising to grades 9-12 next year (current Grades 8-11) Monday, April 19, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. These physicals meet the requirements for our PE and sports programs, so take advantage of this great opportunity!

Mr. Ryan Sellers, chair of the Department of Classical and Modern Languages, will participate in the National Endowment for the Humanities Landmarks of American History and Culture program June 21-25. NEH programs are highly competitive and include workshop participation and a stipend.

Congratulations to rising senior McRae Dickinson, the 2021-22 Honor Council president. In his campaign speech, Dickinson began by emphasizing the importance of the council and the meaning of the school motto, Veritas Honorque.
Dr. Eric Dalle ’93, instructor in English, organized a team of 11 students to compete in the 2021 WordSmith Writing Olympics, sponsored by the University of Memphis English Department, in February. The Owls competed in three events separated by length and grade level, and nine of the competitors were recognized in at least one event.
Two Owls qualified for the American Invitational Math Exam (AIME). Freshman Dannie Dong and seventh-grader James Jin compete this month to qualify for the even-more selective group competing in the United States of America Junior Mathematical Olympiad in April.

The league has announced a middle school swim meet Saturday, April 17. Varsity Head Coach Bryan Parker will coach the Lower School team, and he’d like to offer practices at 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays, beginning this Wednesday, March 24, at the Ric Nuber YMCA.

Two DECA teams took home first place from the Virtual District 1 Competition in the club’s inaugural year. The competitions required teams to create business and marketing plans for fictional clients.
Our first annual March Madness Buzzard Bracket Battle is underway! Open to all alumni and the Class of 2021, this event will benefit the Annual Fund. Compete against other classes for bragging rights and the chance to win a watch party!
The February Parents’ Association Owl Ovation goes to Director of Counseling Joe Abrahams ’96. A parent whose son has faced medical challenges described how Abrahams provided support and encouragement for the family, often on a daily basis. He helped the student formulate a plan for his academics, coordinated communication with instructors, and provided counseling. “It did a lot to lift [our son’s] spirit,” the parent wrote.

Our visiting author for the fourth quarter will be Mr. Jerry Mitchell, an investigative journalist who has helped solve multiple cold-case murders in Mississippi. He is also founder of the Mississippi Center for Investigative Reporting.

The West Tennessee School Band and Orchestra Association selected a record 25 Owls and three alternates for its 2021 All-West Tennessee ensembles. Auditions were virtual because of COVID restrictions, and students had to prepare two videos to submit for judging – one for an excerpt or etude and one for scales.
Two career-oriented X-Block events are planned for Tuesday, March 2, and Thursday, March 4. Upper School students will have a chance to speak with alumni in STEM, engineering, and business fields!
We kicked off Black History Month February 2 with an X-Block presentation featuring an introduction by Assistant Principal Barry Ray, student contributions, and a performance of Lift Every Voice and Sing by Director of Music Matt Tutor ’91 and Music Instructor Chris Carter.

Three Owls earned national mathematics honors in the November AMC 8 competition. Eighth graders Alan Cheng and Oscar Liu and seventh grader Albert Ding earned honor roll designations for their performances. Cheng scored in the top 1% nationally and Ding and Liu scored in the top 5%.
MUS and Hutchison will continue to host optional, on-site COVID-19 testing opportunities for asymptomatic students. The cost is $30 per test for students. The next testing date is Wednesday, January 13, in Hutchison Goodlett Gym Lobby from 1-5 p.m.
The Tennessee Football Coaches Association named seniors Elliot Allen and Roderic Lewis and juniors Hunter Barnes, Kyler Herring, and Clarkson Shoaf to the All-State team for Division II-AAA.
