Twenty-three juniors and seniors joined the MUS chapter of the Cum Laude Society today. Membership in the Cum Laude Society is the highest academic honor students in a secondary school can achieve.
English Instructor Spencer Reese ’94 spoke at the induction ceremony about knowledge and learning, reminding students that “the process of education requires us to become open, receptive, curious, and humble in the face of what we do not know.”
Cum Laude Advisor and English Instructor Lin Askew led the ceremony, and Headmaster Pete Sanders congratulated the boys on their accomplishment. “You have demonstrated mastery of academic life at a school that asks much of its students. I applaud you.”
New inductees from the junior class are Leo Campbell, Harmon Colvett, Hart Gowen, Cooper Grinspun, Dutch Hansen, Cullen Lonergan, Colin McCown, Ryan Peng, Max Shackelford, Edwin Shy, and Tamaz Young.
New inductees from the senior class are Robert Ayotte, Ben Cramer, Arnab Das, Charlie Eason, Cameron Evans, Ben Lindy, Duncan McLean, Drew Rakers, Max Sabin, Cole Saenz, Jeffrey Shulkin, and Jack Wellford.
Current members inducted last year are seniors Churchill Akhigbe, Vaught Benge, Reid Chandler, Parth Dahima, Vijdan Gill, Gregory Guo, Jonathan Huang, Kyle Koester, Rob McFadden, Will Portera, Arjun Puri, and Will Woodmansee.
Modeled on Phi Beta Kappa, the society encourages scholarship under the motto, “Excellence, Justice, Honor.” The MUS chapter was chartered in 1967 and is one of only 17 chapters in the state of Tennessee.
