Gadbois Honored for Math Motivation

The Mathematical Association of America recently honored Dr. Steve Gadbois with the 2019-20 Edyth May Sliffe Award for Distinguished Mathematics Teaching in Middle School and High School. The award is given annually to teachers who have done outstanding work motivating students through participation in one of MAA’s American Mathematics Competition events. Gadbois, who also received the award in 2016, was one of only 20 teachers across the country honored this year.
“The award recognizes teachers, but those teachers must have mathematically strong students who enjoy the challenges we can offer them beyond the classroom,” Gadbois said. “We have such students at MUS, and the school is supportive of extracurricular math activities.”

Arjun Puri ’20 is one of those students. Now a freshman at Harvard, Puri said Dr. Gadbois always seeks to challenge his students. “Because of his love of mathematics, he refuses to be limited by a predefined curriculum, and he consistently goes above and beyond what is expected from him. His efforts for mathematical outreach extend beyond the boundaries of MUS and into the broader community.”
