Owl Ovation goes to Joe Abrahams

The February Parents’ Association Owl Ovation goes to Director of Counseling Joe Abrahams ’96. A parent whose son has faced medical challenges described how Abrahams provided support and encouragement for the family, often on a daily basis. He helped the student formulate a plan for his academics, coordinated communication with instructors, and provided counseling. “It did a lot to lift [our son’s] spirit,” the parent wrote.
A graduate of Auburn University, Abrahams earned a master’s degree in teaching (2011) and an education specialist degree (2017) from the University of Memphis. Before returning to MUS as director of academic support in 2012, he served as director of education at Fournier Learning Strategies in Memphis. He became the MUS director of counseling in 2016.

In his days as an Owl, Abrahams was a Student Council representative, a MUSe contributor, and a basketball team MVP. Later, he kept his hoops skills sharp playing in the Alumni Basketball League, and he coached the freshman team for three years. His ability to hit 3-pointers has made him a valued player in the annual Students vs. Faculty Basketball Game.

Last year Headmaster Pete Sanders presented him with the Jean Barbee Hale Award for Outstanding Service, saying he is “always willing to step in where needed, with both kindness and discretion.”
