Salutatorian Jeffrey Liu

Salutatorian Jeffrey Liu is a scholar distinguished by independent research, academic competition, and support of fellow students. 
Liu worked with three other MUS scholars to develop an application to test the security of passwords, winning the Congressional App Challenge junior year. This year, he joined with four other students to compete in the Modeling the Future Challenge, and they placed second in the nation out of 650 teams. They presented their research, “Breaking the Cycle: Reducing Recidivism in Iowa State Prisons,” in April. In addition, he and his MUS teammates took first place at the Tennessee Mu Alpha Theta math competition.

During his junior year, he honed his skills at MathILy-ER, an intensive residential summer program for mathematically advanced students.

A National Merit Finalist and AP Scholar with Distinction, he played clarinet with the Tennessee All-State Band and anchored the Quiz Bowl team. He tutored students at Balmoral Elementary School as a member of the MUS Civic Service Organization. An E-rated fencer, he was a captain of the MUS varsity fencing team. He was inducted into the MUS Cum Laude Society, National Honor Society, and Mu Alpha Theta.

With a record of helping students prepare for the AIME (American Invitational Mathematics Examination) and National Chemistry Olympiad exams, Liu hopes to hang his legacy on academic excellence and building community. His ability to identify and solve problems extends beyond deriving the principles of theoretical math or building mathematical proofs. He uses shared interests to support other students.

The son of Ms. Lei Cai and Mr. Xuan Liu of Collierville, he graduated summa cum laude and will attend the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) where he plans to pursue a degree in mathematics and computer science.
