Owl Examines Cyclone Paths

Dannie Dong ’24 received an “Outstanding Poster” honor for his project “Predicting Tropical Cyclone Paths through Learning from Existing Methods” at the Math Association of America’s MathFest held in Tampa, Florida, August 2-5.
Dong’s project aimed to develop an ensemble technique to predict tropical cyclone paths in real time. The senior says the project was motivated by his long interest in tracking tropical cyclones. Based on his findings, Dong concluded “that the developed approach overall outperforms all the existing techniques.”
 
The poster presentation competition was aimed mostly at college students. Judges complimented Dong’s clear description of the project and remarked that the technique he highlighted “works well and could be applied in other oceans.” 
 
Mathematics Instructor Steve Gadbois, pictured with Dong, judged the competition but did not judge his student’s presentation.
 
MathFest offers professional development courses, workshops, and themed paper sessions to develop mathematics and education knowledge and skills.
