MUS Welcomes New Coaches to Basketball Staff

MUS is excited to welcome Ross Spain, Jordan Marzette-Miller, Wes Crump, and Peter Zanca ’06 to the MUS basketball program. Each coach will begin coaching duties this summer as the Owls begin summer competition and camps.

Coach Ross Spain will lead the JV team and will also assist with the varsity. He is replacing Scott Rose '82 who is retiring from coaching after four years of leading the MUS JV team. Coach Spain was a standout player at FACS scoring over 1,200 points as a three-year starter. He earned all-district and all-metro honors, and he was named honorable mention all-state. He has spent the last 20 years serving as a coach in various levels of youth basketball including varsity, jv, middle school, elementary, and club. Coach Spain’s coaching duties at MUS will be additions to his role as assistant principal to the lower school, a position he recently accepted after spending 14 years as the Director of Student Life for PDS. Prior to PDS, Coach Spain served as the middle school Dean of Students and Athletics Director at Hutchison. He and his wife April are proud parents to daughters Madison and Grace and to son Grant.

Coach Jordan Marzette-Miller joins MUS after recently moving to Memphis to accept a position with Nike. He will work with Coach Robert O'Kelley and Coach Spain to assist me with the varsity team. Marzette-Miller, a 2011 graduate of Furman University, earned All-Southern Conference honors after leading the Paladins to their highest win total (22-11) in 30 years. He played his last two years at Furman with current MUS head coach David Willson ’99, who was an assistant coach at Furman during that time. Marzette-Miller is a native of Memphis where he earned all-state honors as a shooting guard at White Station High School. Since graduating from Furman, he has worked as the lead assistant at Beaver County Community College (PA) and spent time working with players to develop individual skills in his previous hometown of Chicago. Coach Marzette-Miller and his wife Sheena are parents of two boys, Jordan Jr. (Jordy) and Jaxon.

Coach Wes Crump, a 20-year high school and middle school coaching veteran, returns to MUS after a three-year stint as the head basketball coach at Riverdale Middle School. He will serve as the head freshmen team coach, replacing Coach Joe Abrahams '96 who recently accepted the athletics director position at Westminster Academy. Prior to his time at Riverdale, Coach Crump spent five years as the head coach for the MUS 8th grade team. Crump and his wife Stephanie reside in Germantown where he serves as School Safety Supervisor for the Germantown school district.

Coach Peter Zanca ’06 will serve as head 7th grade coach next year. He is filling in for Coach Jason Peters '88, who is stepping back from coaching basketball next season, but will remain at MUS as a teacher and golf coach. Coach Zanca was a standout player at MUS earning all-district honors for two consecutive seasons. He played collegiately for Rhodes College, and after graduating from Rhodes, Coach Zanca worked as a basketball analyst for the Indiana Pacers, Oklahoma City Thunder, and University of Memphis. This will be his first season coaching for the Owls. He will join Coach Matt Bakke (8th grade team) in providing a great basketball experience for MUS lower school boys.

Coach Willson expressed gratitude to the departing coaches for a job well-done. “While we are excited to welcome new coaches to MUS, I would also like to recognize Coach Rose, Coach Abrahams, and Coach Peters for their selfless service and leadership. Coach Abrahams did an outstanding job stepping in this season for the freshmen team and we wish him well in his new role at Westminster Academy. Coach Rose served for the last four years as JV head coach and varsity assistant. He also served as 7th grade coach from 1996 to 2006. Coach Peters is stepping back from basketball coaching after 12 years of leading the 7th grade team. He and Coach Rose are MUS Basketball coaching legends and will be missed on the sideline.”
