BCS Media Recap

Thursday night against Briarcrest I believe was our finest effort of the season. All phases of our team displayed excellent execution. We made all the plays we needed on offense and our defense was spectacular as usual. It was a great way to end an exceptional regular season, finishing with a 9-1 record and earning the region championship. I also felt it was important that we enter the playoffs with a game like this where we demonstrate to ourselves that we really can play football at a championship level.

MERCURY AWARDS:
Begun in 1991 due to the generosity of Owl booster Earl Blankenship, the Mercury Awards are presented to players of the game (usually offense and defense) and to the Buzzard Player of the Week (Scout Team). Each winner receives a special award at the end of the season, and these are cherished by many boys.
This week the Players of the Game are Brady Hughes and Gavin Helton. Brady played his best game as our starting QB and there are a couple of stats that could be interpreted as him playing one of the best games a QB has ever played at MUS. He set 3 school records. His 84.4% completion rate is the new standard. He set a record for passing yards gained per attempt at 17.9. And his pass efficiency rating of 336.7 moves to the top of the list. This was his 2nd time this year to throw 4 TD passes in a game which ranks 3rd all-time. Gavin led our stout defensive team this week with 6 tackles, including 3 for loss, one of which was a sack. With the return of Thomas Davis inside Gavin was able to spend all his reps at this outside LB spot and it was obvious he was very comfortable there! Our Buzzard player of the Week is Sam Galler. Sam is a sophomore LB but was pressed into duty as a running back last Friday night against Oakhaven where he responded very well. He continued that roll in practice this week on the scout team for our defense.

We did have some bad news on Wednesday when we got the report that Derek Clenin ’03 was hospitalized with a serious illness. Derek most recently has served MUS coaching our 7th grade team where his passion for competing at a high level has affected many of our boys. Please remember Derek, Kristen, and his sons Colt, Cooper, and Cruz in your prayers.
Playoff season is entirely different football than what we experience during the regular season. The pressure and intensity that surfaces knowing that each game could be your last certainly creates a lot of stress. I believe our team has been tested well this season and is prepared to rise to the challenge! GO OWLS!!
