Clenin Scholarship Fund Surpasses $1 million

When Derek Clenin ’03 accepted the 2020-21 Alumni Executive Board Volunteer of the Year Award, he said he coached for three reasons: love of the boys, love of the school, and love of football. “I take great responsibility in setting a godly example for the boys I coach. I treat them and care for them like I do my three boys. … I’ve found it’s been a blessing for me more than they realize.”
Mr. Clenin, who lost a fierce battle with leukemia on October 8, 2024, uplifted countless lives – from the gridiron athletes he competed with at Memphis University School and University of Memphis, to the seventh-grade football players he coached for 15 years, to the financial professionals he worked beside at Raymond James, to the church members he worshipped alongside at Second Presbyterian Church.

It’s no surprise, then, that the Derek M. Clenin Scholarship endowment grew to over $1 million in just seven months. Established by family, friends, and alumni, the fund was boosted by a generous anonymous gift in May, making it the third-largest scholarship endowment at MUS.

It is a fitting tribute for a man dedicated to mentoring MUS scholar-athletes that this endowment will provide tuition assistance so more deserving boys will benefit from his alma mater’s excellence. Through the generosity of those who loved him, Derek Clenin will continue to positively influence Owls for generations to come.
