Sowell Wins Coaches Grant

Science Department Chair Analice Sowell has won a grant to participate in the 2020-21 Science Coaches program. She will be working with Charles Garner Ph.D., associate professor and research chemist at the University of Memphis.
“We have three experiments we hope to run, two centered on polymers and one centered on single crystal growth,” said Sowell, who has a background as a research chemist. “We are working together through this grant to enhance the curriculum of the MUS Materials Science course.”  (Honors Accelerated Chemistry II: Materials Science explores the internal structures of metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites to develop understanding of their mechanical, physical, chemical, electrical, and thermal properties.)

Science Coaches is a joint project of the American Chemical Society and American Association of Chemistry Teachers (AACT) educational outreach initiative, dedicated to enhancing science skills in students across the United States. The program pairs chemists (coaches) with AACT teacher members in elementary, middle, and high schools. Coaches accepted into the program have the opportunity to form a valuable relationship with a teacher by volunteering face-to-face over the course of a school year.
