Gates Earns April Owl Ovation

The April Parents’ Association Owl Ovation goes to Instructor in Mathematics Nancy Gates. Mrs. Gates joined the faculty in 1998 and has held the Donald Bailey Wiener Chair of Mathematics since 1999. She currently teaches Honors Accelerated Precalculus and AP Calculus BC. Mrs. Gates was chair of the Mathematics Department from 1998-2018 before handing the title to Mr. Darin Clifft and Mr. Phillip Stalls.
By fall 2020, all of her AP Calculus BC students – that’s 352 boys over two-plus decades – qualified for college credit (3 or higher), and of those, a staggering 326 – that’s nearly 93% of her students – earned a 5 on the test, the best possible score.

Mrs. Gates received a Bachelor of Science with a double major in mathematics and psychology from Mississippi University for Women. She earned her Master of Science in mathematics from the University of Memphis.

A parent of a student in Mrs. Gates’ class described her as “brilliant, efficient, thorough, and focused,” and an asset to the Mathematics Department. Thank you, Mrs. Gates, and congratulations!
