Second Manhood Breakfast: Know Thyself

The Manhood Breakfast series for Lower School continued October 14 with guest alumni DeAndre Jones ’08 and Mahad Jamil ’16 focusing on the importance of knowing oneself. Student Life Coordinator Stephond Allmond ’10, who organized the monthly series, led the discussion – which he kicked off with a request for the boys to hit the floor and do three pushups to get them going.
As they munched on breakfast sandwiches, the students heard how Jones and Jamil have been influenced by Community Creed principles.

Jones, a Manager at Deloitte Digital, spoke about the importance of service in laying a foundation for others to follow and “pouring back into the lives of other people.” At Deloitte he has developed an internship program for minority athletes after college. He also sees the value of involvement in establishing a community and building a network as you develop your personal brand.

Jamil, a student in biomedical engineering at the University of Memphis, cited accountability as a principle that resonates in his life. “When you fail, you need to look inside to see what you need to do better.” He also noted the importance of humility. When he was younger, he sought praise for his accomplishments, he said. As he matured, he discovered the intrinsic reward in doing what is right and good.

The boys finished by taking an online personality test to help them better understand their strengths and weaknesses.

The next Manhood Breakfast is Friday, November 11, at 7:30 a.m., with breakfast starting at 7:15 a.m.
