Elahi Educates about Ramadan

Senior Abdullah Elahi held a chapel presentation March 8 on the most blessed time for Muslims around the world – Ramadan, a month of fasting, prayer, and introspection. This year the observance runs from March 22 - April 21.
Elahi, the president of the Mental Health Club, explained that Muslims who are able abstain from food and drink during daylight hours, consuming only two meals, Suhoor, about an hour and a half before sunrise, and Iftar, after sunset. He shared his daily schedule and described the rigors of fasting, especially at the start of the month. Over time it becomes easier, he said, adding that he sometimes forgets not to fast when Ramadan ends.

The practice has taught him two important lessons: “The first is that fasting puts yourself in the shoes of those less fortunate than you. …  After doing some research, I found out that world hunger affects nearly 10% of people globally. That’s one in 10 people.

“The second lesson I learned is a simple observation: If one can withhold food and water, essentials for survival, during the day for a whole month, then he can stop any bad habit and start any good habit.”

He encouraged his fellow Owls to consider if they want to make changes in their habits, a process that takes discipline and consistency. “If you want to break the shackles of laziness, pessimism, and self-doubt, and realize your utmost potential, take Ramadan as proof that it is possible and that it will happen.”

Elahi ended his chapel presentation by sharing “the Merry Christmas equivalent to Ramadan,” Ramadan Mubarak, which means to have a blessed Ramadan.
